Since we are never alone on the water, it is essential to be aware of the key safety practices when riding a WaveRunner. A responsible rider always prioritizes the safety of themselves, others, and the surrounding wildlife.

START WITH THE BASICS

  • Familiarize yourself with local boating laws, including driver's license requirements, age limits, special registrations, speed limits, and restricted areas.
  • Never drink and ride.
  • Always wear a life vest.
  • Training can enhance your WaveRunner experience and safety; look for training opportunities in your area.
  • Wear appropriate protective gear, such as a wetsuit or drysuit, gloves, footwear, and eyewear.
  • Secure your lanyard to your person or personal flotation device.
  • Make sure your WaveRunner is ready for the trip, considering fuel and battery levels.
  • Stay informed about the local weather forecast and only ride if conditions are safe.
  • Have reliable means of communication, such as a VHF radio or waterproof telephone.

RIDE RESPONSIBLY

  • Research the area where you’ll be riding; check for local hazards, prohibited areas, and navigation warnings.
  • Avoid aggressive maneuvers to reduce the risk of collisions and other accidents.
  • Do not ride in fog or restricted visibility.
  • Avoid riding at night.
  • Riding with others can be more enjoyable and provides support in case of safety or mechanical issues.
  • Keep a lookout for other crafts and people in the water.
  • Take early action to avoid collisions.
  • Never apply throttle when anyone is at the stern of the WaveRunner.
  • Stay clear of the intake grate when the engine is on.
  • Be prepared with a first-aid kit, grab bag, and anchor.
  • Personal and third-party insurance is recommended for all vessels and is compulsory in some areas. Consider your riding location and its insurance requirements.
  • Notify someone onshore about your departure and planned return time.
  • If you capsize, turn off the engine. Swim to the stern, check the correct direction to right the WaveRunner, and board from the rear.
